Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a two-step process that typically takes place over the course of two appointments, depending on how far the gum disease has advanced. During the first step, we’ll remove all plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth and below the gum line. Then, we’ll smooth out the roots of the teeth, removing any hardened deposits of bacteria to allow your gum tissue to healthily reattach.

Periostat Antibiotic Therapy

Periostat is a 20mg antibiotic (Doxycycline) in pill form that you’ll take daily to help treat your infected gums by reducing the prevalence of harmful oral bacteria. It’s important to follow the directions that we’ll walk you through for the prescription and finish the complete treatment to avoid developing a resistance to the antibiotic.
