Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Unlike medical insurance, dental insurance is all about prevention. Its primary focus is to help people afford routine care so they can stop the most common dental problems before they even begin. While dental insurance can still be used to offset the cost of restorative treatments, like crowns and fillings, it usually does so at a lower rate compared to preventive services. This design, over time, leads to better oral health and less money spent on dental care, which is a big win-win for patients.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Many dental insurance plans follow the “100-80-50” model, which looks something like this:
Preventive services are covered 100% (checkups, cleanings, X-rays)
Basic restorative services are covered 80% (fillings, bonding)
Advanced restorative services are covered 50% (crowns, bridges, dentures, extractions)
These numbers are why we strongly recommend our patients get at least two checkups and cleanings each year. Both appointments are completely covered by most policies, plus they reduce a patient’s risk of needing restorative services with less coverage.

This simply means that we have agreed to provide our services for reduced fees, and then the insurance company pays for part of them.
